Cloud Cap Trailhead sits at close to 5,900 feet in the Hood River Ranger District, beside Cloud Cap Saddle Campground. From Hood River, head south on Highway 35, then take Cooper Spur Road and Cloud Cap Road (Forest Road 3512). The last stretch is narrow and unpaved, so bring a high-clearance vehicle, ideally one with four-wheel drive.
This is a main starting point for the Timberline Trail, the Tilly Jane Trail, and some of the tougher climbing routes on Mt. Hood. A short walk leads up to Cloud Cap Inn, a rustic lodge from the late 1800s. In winter, people reach it on skis or snowshoes. Drinking water is available, but the small lot fills fast on weekends.
Getting there
From Hood River, OR
- travel approximately 13.1 miles south on Oregon Hwy 35 and turn right (east) onto Cooper Spur Road, approximately 0.3 miles south of milepost 74.
- Follow Cooper Spur Road 2.4 miles to Cloud Cap Road (Forest Road 3512) and turn left (southeast).
- Follow Cloud Cap Road (Forest Road 3512) approximately 9.5 miles to the trailhead at Cloud Cap Saddle Campground.
Road notes
Cloud Cap Road is usually snowed out and inaccessible to vehicles until late June or July. The last 10 miles to the trailhead are narrow and unpaved. High-clearance and four-wheel drive vehicles are strongly recommended.
Parking
The rustic parking area has limited capacity, often filling up quickly especially on weekends.
