West Shore Day Use sits on the southwest side of Timothy Lake at about 3,200 feet, on the Zigzag Ranger District. Portland General Electric runs it together with the Forest Service. It’s a quieter spot for a lakeside lunch under mature trees, with picnic tables and vault toilets but no drinking water.

Paddlers can slide canoes, kayaks and paddleboards in right from the shore, and the Timothy Lake Trail #528 is right there for hiking, biking and wildlife watching. From Highway 26, take Skyline Road (Forest Road 42) south, then Forest Road 57 west across the dam to the turnoff. Parking is limited and works best for standard-size vehicles.

Getting there

From Sandy, OR

  1. Travel east on U.S. Highway 26 for approximately 40 miles to Skyline Road (Forest Road 42).
  2. Turn right on Skyline Road, travel south 9 miles.
  3. Turn right on Forest Road 57, west 3.5 miles over the dam, and turn right to the West Shore Day Use Area.
