Sitting at about 1,800 feet in the Zigzag Ranger District, Tollgate Trailhead is close to Tollgate Campground and Day Use Area, a convenient outing from Portland. It marks the low end of the Pioneer Bridle Trail, a route of nearly 10 miles that runs through the campground and drops for most of its length toward this trailhead.

Just east of the campground stands a copy of the original tollgate on the Barlow Road, which Oregon Trail travelers went through from 1879 to 1919. From Sandy, drive southeast on Highway 26 about 23 miles; the trailhead is on the right before the campground and day-use area. No drinking water is available here.
