About six miles up Salmon River Road from Welches, Salmon Butte Trailhead is where the Salmon Butte Trail begins. It’s part of the Zigzag Ranger District, and the trail heads into the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness.

Facilities at the trailhead are basic. There’s a restroom that’s available seasonally, but no drinking water, so bring all you’ll need for the hike. Since you’re entering wilderness, plan to carry out everything you bring in and leave the trail the way you found it.
