The first pullout you come to on Salmon River Road after crossing into the national forest is Old Salmon River Trailhead, about two and a half miles south of Highway 26 in the Zigzag Ranger District. It’s the start of the Old Salmon River Trail, a 1.9-mile path that runs alongside the Salmon River.

The trail stays near the road, but the steady sound of the river and the old-growth forest keep it pleasant, and it’s an easy choice for families with kids. You can picnic here too. Vault toilets are maintained seasonally, and there’s no drinking water.
