A simple pullout on Dead Point Road (Forest Road 2820) serves as Mt. Defiance South Trailhead, in the Hood River Ranger District. Three trails lead from here into the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness: Wyeth Trail #411, Mt. Defiance Trail #413 and Bear Lake Trail #413A.

From Hood River, take the Dee Highway to Dee, cross the Hood River’s East Fork, and follow Punchbowl Road over the West Fork, where it becomes Dead Point Road. The trailhead is about 10 miles up that road, which is rough and dusty. Park parallel on a wide shoulder on the south side, with room for four or five vehicles. There are no toilets or drinking water.

Getting there

  1. From Hood River, OR travel south on Oregon Highway 281/Dee Highway (it goes past the Hood River airport) approximately 11 miles to Lost Lake Road at Dee.
  2. Take the right fork here and cross the East Fork of the Hood River.
  3. Turn right again and go 1.2 miles up Punchbowl Road until it crosses the West Fork of the Hood River.
  4. The road becomes Dead Point Road (Forest Road 2820) here.
  5. Follow Dead Point Road approximately10 miles to a wide spot on the south side of the road where cars can be parallel parked.
