Lower Hunchback Trailhead is tucked into the parking lot of the Zigzag Ranger Station, 17.5 miles east of Sandy on US 26. It marks the west end of Hunchback Trail #793, which follows the wooded Hunchback Ridge toward the heart of the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness, with a handful of rocky viewpoints along the way.
Turn south into the ranger station, leave your car toward the lot’s east end, and look for the trail on the lot’s south side. Restrooms are on site, but there is no potable water, so fill up before you go. The ranger station setting makes it a handy place to start a day in the Zigzag Ranger District.
