Getting to High Prairie Trailhead, in the Barlow Ranger District, takes some backroad driving. Leave Highway 35 for paved Dufur Mill Road (Road 44), then take gravel High Prairie Road 4410 uphill to a T intersection where it turns to dirt. The lot is just to the left and fits about 15 cars.

From here, the High Prairie Trail heads into the Badger Creek Wilderness and joins the Divide Trail. Posts keep vehicles off the old summit road, which now serves as a hiking trail. An information sign stands at the trailhead, and there’s no drinking water, so bring plenty.

Getting there

From Hood River, OR

  1. Drive 26.5 , miles south on Hwy 35.
  2. From Hwy. 35 turn off at road 44 (Dufur Mill Road).
  3. Turn east on this paved road for 3.8 miles and then turn off onto gravel High Prairie Road 4410.
  4. After 4.7 miles, (always keep turning uphill), reach a T-shaped intersection where the gravel road turns to dirt.
  5. Turn left for 200 yards and park at the trailhead parking lot.
  6. (Posts block vehicles from the old summit road - now a hiking trail.)
